I am looking to purchase a SCWD wavemaker unit for my 40 gallon tank. Ideally I would like to make it a closed loop system w/ external pump.
I am stumped on what type of pump to use. Any suggestions? I am looking to get moderate flow...nothing too wild and churning.

Factors I am considering: quality, price, and silence (since the tank is in my bedroom)

BTW, I read somewhere that the scwd has a tendency to leak? Even with clamps? Anyone know if this is common?

thanks!

Just about any pump will operate a scwd, up to about 1400 gph. The higher the flow, the faster the switching rate. I use a mag 5 (500gph) for mine, and it's fine. Mag drive pumps are cheap, quiet and reliable.

If it were my 40 gallon, I'd probably go for 700-1000 gph, remembering that you will lose a good bit of flow in elbows and in the scwd itself.

SCWDs occasionally crack, but I haven't heard about a big problem with leakage except when hoseclamps are overtightened.

re: flow rate

Thanks for the info. Do you know how much flow approx I will lose through the scwd?
The pump itself would sit about 3.5 feet under the tank, so that combined with the scwd and pipe restrictions...maybe the mag 9.5 would be better over a 7? I just hate to buy the wrong size...
:thud:
