Hi everyone, this is my first post.

After years of always wanting to have a fish tank I have finally decided to do it, but I have a problem. I live in Astoria, Queens and we used to have two aquarium shops in the area, one of which was supposed to be very good. I was going to go to that one, and then learned to my horror that since the recession hit they've both closed! Now I don't know where to go.

If there's anyone who lives in New York City who can suggest a good place to go that would be awesome. I know there's a bunch of other aquarium and pet stores in NYC, but I have read a lot already about many of them not taking care of their fish and selling you sick or dying ones that won't last. I don't know how you can tell, which I'm sure is something I will learn over time, but starting out I'd like to go somewhere that I at least feel confident won't sell me some duds and can actually give me good advice and recommendations.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I am afraid I can't help you find a fish store but I just wanted to say :welcome: to Aquaria Central :).

dude sorry to hear that, i have to go 25 miles out of town to get to my LFS, the last one that did freshwater in town just closed too! i had no idea i hadnt been in for like a month then out of the blue i was gonna go splurge and it was completely emptied out, i just stood there in front of the store for a while, i didnt even get to say goodbye to my LFS owner, that was a sad day.........
GOOD LUCK!

Hiya Jt. WElcome to AC!I'm from Astoria as well and I know what your talking about. There was one fish store on Astoria blvd but that closed a year and a half ago and Wonderful world of fish on Steinway closed down two weeks ago. So now in the neighborhood there is a Petland on 30th and a bigger one on Ditmars blvd. I only get the supplies here. For fish and plants I go to New World Aquarium in Manhattan, there are a couple of fish stores in chinatown as well. There is one in Woodside as well but I'm not sure what the name of the store is. And for a really good selection but its quite a hike coz you have to take the 7 train to Main st flushing and take the bus to bayside is Fishtown USA. They have everything and its well priced but the selection of fresh and saltwater livestock and live plants is amazing. I sometimes just go here on my days off to hang out and browse. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes.

Marl, this is great info. I had no idea Sea Vision closed that long ago, but I'm not really surprised. It looked a little sketchy to me. I always liked walking passed Wonderful World and would go in there sometimes just to look. Of course, typical now that I want to buy they've closed. And I have been thinking about this for a few weeks now. Too bad I didn't catch them before they shut for good.

I might take that trip to Woodside if you think it's worth it and the weather is okay. I could always get a cab I guess. I have heard a lot about New World Aquarium but wasn't sure about it since it has mixed reviews. But it's easier to get to so maybe I should check it out anyway.

if you find a store its best to find out what day they get their fish in and buy your fish the day before on the day the fish are delivered they are stressed i have good luck doing it that way one of my favorite fish stores closed down a couple of weeks ago

The closest store to you is on Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights about 74st, it is about the same stock as the wonderful world of fish that was by you, then you have one on 76 and woodside avenue Elmhurst.
Then you have in Flushing Kissena Aquarium 46-30 Kissena Blvd, then theres also one on Northern Blvd by Main St.
the best out of the bunch would be Fishtown USA in Bayside ask for George.
