I will suggest a JD and show him pics and profiles. He wants this to be "HIS" tank so the decision is ultimately his. Also, we are in no hurry to get another tank just yet. We are in an apt and just about out of room! Just doing research at this point.
 
How long would a juvie JD "fit" in a 29? How fast do they grow? I may be getting a 29 tomorrow and rather than move my fish around, I would love to get hubby started - if there is sufficient time before we would have to upgrade.....

Jack Demseys all the way!!! You can often get them already grown at a LFS, since people turn them after they outgrow a small tank. I am always so tempted to get another (large) tank so I can get one myslef. I tried to talk my son into one but he was happy with a 10g with Tanganyikan Shell Dwellers :)
 
ps I would LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE if I could get my husband hooked on fish!
