Help! Gill swollen

dank104, did you do water tests before you went to the LFS for medication? A water quality issue can also produce the symptoms you were referring to.

praziquantel and acriflavine, from what I've read, are often used for treating internals and I have them in the meds on my shelf. Dunno about the others.

Which med you use is pretty dependent on an accurate diagnosis of the problem. If you have ich starting up in the gill, this stuff isn't going to help.

Hoping someone more versed in those listed chemicals can tell us if they are any good or not.

I see liv2pdl posting, so maybe he can shed some light and correct my inaccuracies.

my water tested ok, except the ph is a little high (8.0) and the water is very hard. i had ick previously, but it was about a week ago and i did a 25% water change since too. i'm not going to worry too much about it unless my other fish start having the same symptoms. but it would be nice to know the cause.

sounds like the Ph may have caused this, when fish are introduced to more extreme conditions their body mucus starts to break down and come off, at this stage fish are more vunerable to disease. Have any new fish been added within a week or so? what other fish do you have in the tank and how big is the tank? my guess is also an internal parasite maybe brought in by a new fish.

i haven't added any new fish since the platty died. i've been doing weekly water changes with spring water to bring the ph and water hardness down. the platty was in my tank for 3 weeks though before it started having any symptoms.

Dank, I would suggest you start your own thread ;) !! You'll get better responses and it won't be as confusing!! Using spring water might have been part of the problem, you should mention that in the post. sometimes store bought bottled water like that does not have any minerals etc. which are important.

Nod, Dank, start a new thread and please post what the pH is and why you want to bring it down. Spring water will probably cause you all sorts of problems.

As someone said in regards to tap water, "if it's good enough for you to drink, it's good enough for your fish to swim in".

what a load of crap, who ever siad that is completely wrong. Do you see many people with discus and the sort using raw tap water? NO! people will use R/O water or rain water. Do You see people using tap water for their marine aquariums? NO! do you know why, it is because it causes all kinds of problems, pipes may leach copper, you will most likely get blooms of diatom algae.

And tell liv2pdl that he is full of crap.

Good luck!

In case you didn't notice, this is a Freshwater Forum, not Marine. There is a difference.

Straight R/O water, in my understanding, needs some sort of supplementation for alot of the chemicals/minerals that it is missing. For the average freshwater aquarium, that is much more work than necessary. Discus/marine set ups are a totally different ballgame:)
