Let's say i want maybe 1 clownfish or a pair of clownfish, what will i need to successfully house them?
Tank is between 10g or 20g.
I have 40g filter with heater ready, and i don't plan to add any corals. Thanks :)
 
are you going to add any sand or live rock? you will need salt about a 25 lb.box to start..aslo you will need a pump.. or even a powerhead..but most sertain a pump.and that should be about it cause on a tank that small i don't think you can use a protein skimmer.. but i really don't think that tank is big enough for clownfish? damsels yes but not sure about the clowns ..i would just ask your LFS they could tell you better than myself...hope some of this helps you?...
 
Depends.. You want just the fish? Then you need some salt and RO water..

Want the fish and some inverts? Same as above, plus enough livesand (not the bagged stuff, but it works if you must..) to make a 2-3" bed, some liverock, a small powerhead if your filter can't turn the tank over 10x per hour..

Want fish, inverts and coral? Same as above, plus enough light to give yourself 3-4wpg..

I would avoid that.. Forums like this are a far better place for information than the LFS that may or may not have a clue or care how many fish you kill.. You kill one, they make another sale.. Not to say all are that way, but a lot of them are. If you want good local advice, seek out a reef keeper club near you.

and yes, you can get nano skimmers.
 
The rock doesn't need any specific care, it wouldn't hurt to blow off some of the garbage that collects on them from time to time right before a water change.

As for the LFS's advice, it's subjective to each store. I happen to have an awesome LFS with trustworthy advice. If their tanks look clean, corals look healthy & their fish are in good shape, I wouldn't worry so much about taking their advice. But I have learned, you never just get advice from one source, wether it's the forums or your LFS.
 
Well, up until a couple days ago, I thought I had a fantastic LFS that I could depend on as well.. Then, I went in on Saturday and was behind a family checking out.. They had a tank, hood, filter, gravel, the whole setup.. They also had a bag of ryukins. They left and I checked out as quickly as I could, so I could speak to them outside. I asked if they explained the cycling process for their new 10g tank, and they had no idea what I was talking about.. Keep in mind, this is the best, most trusted and respected fish store in my area.. I was disgusted by this. You are right though, some are great..

as for the rock, it just needs some light and some circulation.. There are some elements required to get the rock to grow and maintain some nice purple coraline (calcium, iodine) but those should take care of themselves with proper water changes if all you have it some liverock..
 
i would do 1 oscellaris clownfish in that set-up. i wouyld go with 20, use large hob filter and a power with live rock rubble for media and make a sand bed tahts 2-3" tall. i would also use LR (liverock) about a ib per gallon, it makes an excellent bio filter and looks great and makes the fish feel at home. hope that helps!
