Hey everybody...UGH this is not a happy story. First, let me say that I've been coming here periodically for 2 years, when I was a new aquarist and full of questions. Thankfully I found this site and you all helped me to become the responsible, knowledgeable fish owner I am today! I currently have:

29G community tank
5G Guppy tank
Betta in a vase

Ok, yesterday my sister had a party for her twin 6 yr old boys. The theme was "SpongeBob Squarepants". The yard was decorated in a tropical/aquatic way, the games were things like "crabwalk", etc. It was cute. But what was NOT so cute: As party favors, every guest recieved a tiny bowl (holding no more than 2 cups of water) with a farily large GOLDFISH!

Okay, let's forget the fact that goldfish are obviously freshwater unlike spongebob and Patrick...that's the least of the problems! These goldfish were BIG! I don't know what she was thinking. Some of the party guests who didn't have another adult with them were like "Uh, how am I supposed to drive home with this? It was disgusting--these poor fish were already swimming in a bowl of their own poop. The water was a cloudy mess. Of couse it would be!

Upon arriving home I immediately transferred the poor thing into a bigger vase tha had once housed had my second Betta (I accidently poured him down the drain when I was doing a water change once :o ). This vase is probably about 3 times the size of the bowl the goldfish was in, but it's still nowhere near big enough for him!

My question: what do do next? We do have a spare, empty 10 gallon tank that we could set up in the basement rec room. (In fact, I was going to set up this tank awhile back but with my lack of free time I didn't think I'd be able to keep up on all the water changes). I figure a 10G HAS to be better for this poor guy than a vase. But I know nothing about keeping goldfish. They don't need heaters, right? Can I get another (small) goldfish to put in the 10G with him? And what would you suggest the dozen other party guests do with their big goldfish in their tiny bowls? Many of the guests are other family members. TIA. I'm attaching a pic of the fish, keep in mind he is in the big vase I changed him to. ( wish I'd taken a pic of the bowl but it stunk so badly I threw it in the trash immediately)

I'd dont apologize for this one bit..your sister is an idiot as well as yourself for letting this happen. You should have demanded that those poor fish be taken straight to a pet shop and at least fed to their biggest predators. What the both of you did was totally irresponsible. Whats worse , you teach children a lesson like that. You should be ashamed of yourselves. You didn't read any of the Nemo tank nightmares that have been posted here. Clown fish and Hippo tangs are being setanced to death all over the world due to that movie.
Unbelievable..all for some party that was forgotten by the next day. Real nice !
 :sad

Oh yeah right. Like it was really an option to stage a protest at the party and snatch the dozen tiny bowls of goldfish in my arms and drive them back to the pet store. Give me a break please, that wasn't exactly realistic. Don't you think you're being a little harsh calling me an idiot? If I didn't care about the fish I would've have posted here. Thanks for the great advice buddy.

Yeah that was pretty harsh.

What I would suggest is that you recommend everyone to take the goldfish back to a fish store. Even volunteer to do it for them if you would be willing.

Most goldfish are recommended to be in a 50 gallon + but that is only what I have read, no personal experience here. They definetly need to be in a tank with a filter on it at the minimum, just placing them in a vase or bowl is nooooo good.

And while they are not tropical fish they do need a heater in the tank set at a low setting to maintain a stable temperature. The fluctuations in temp will be very stressful on them.

I'd inform everyone to how important and how costly it would be to take decent care of the little buggers and then volunteer to return them to a fish store for them. You'd most likely get all of them.

Last summer my granddaughter came by after going to the fair. She had a goldfish that she had won. She was so excited about this. So I had an extra 5 gal tank, I put this gold fish in fully expecting it to die. Well heck no it started growing. So my next step was to go to yard sales. I found a 29 gal for 5 bucks. This fish is still growing and healthy. Neddless to say she is still proud of her fish. Look around you can find tanks for cheap. Dont leave it in the vase.

Finaddictfred, that was rude and embarrassing. Certainly, teapea had no idea this was going to take place, and afterwards she has said "what a bad idea". However, I would have done the same thing if it were me... if you don’t have an aquarium at home already setup, a bowl would be the next option. Obviously, any bowl is not a good long-term solution, but it is a start.

Teapea, is there any way you can get a hold of a 20-gallon aquarium, assuming you plan to keep this fish?

Thanks to everyone (other than the first reply of course) for your advice!

Some of you may have skimmed my post and not seen the question I had regarding the 10G tank. I have a spare 10G with all the accesories (light/filter/heater). I could easily set it up in my basement, I even have the stand for it. I just didn't know how long it would take for this guy to outgrow the 10G, if it was even worth the effort or should I just take the fish back. I'm not really up to getting another 30G just for this fish.

The vase was only temporary of course, but certainly better than the tiny bowl it was in. That bowl held probably 12oz of water!

I wonder why it's not more known that goldfish grow so large? It was an innocent mistake my sister made, with the "goldfish in a bowl" images all around I can't really blame her. And too bad the pet store didn't advise her better. (She bought them at Petco, I would never EVER get a fish at Petco).

Anyway thanks again I appreciate the feedback!

Well, yeah, the 10G would be a good temporary fix for your goldfish. But it would only be temporary and wouldn't help any of the other fish that were given out at the party. I think if any of the people aren't willing to provide a permanent solution for the well being of the fish, including the learning and maintenance needed, they should be returned immediately.

Just a little something positive:
When I was four, my daycare group went to the local pool and we all went swimming every couple days during the summer. At one point, they had a little test to see who could swim (with water wings on I believe :) ) to a certain point in the pool. Those of us who passed the test were each given a lunch baggie containing a small goldfish with a tag attached stating our achievment. I was thrilled. The fish was not.
My mother was not too impressed to see what I was bringing home, but you can't exactly take away your four year old's prize, or their first aquatic pet, without a temper tantrum on your hands. My dad had kept fish years before and knew a bowl wasn't appropriate, so mom went out and bought a 10g aquarium with all the necessary equipment and there our goldfish lived for quite a long time, eating the smaller fish my mom bought to 'keep it company' from time to time.
You can use this as a lesson about responsible pet ownership for your child, and possibly their friends as well. Set up your 10g, and let your child take care of their new pet (with help from mom of course).
My goldfish may not have had the best life, and certainly I wouldn't keep one in a 10g if I set out to keep goldfish, but considering this was thrust upon you I think you're doing amazingly well! That goldfish from so long ago was what started me on a lifelong love of fish; its life served a mighty purpose :D

I knew that my responce was not going to be taken well. But I had to say it as Im sure nobody else was going to voice thier opinon on how bad of an idea it was. I do hope the fish does well..as do I hope that every fish that was givin away has a happy life..but..I'm a realist and know better. It may just be a feeder gold fish but thats not the point
