Details on the tank will be helpful...but in truth, it looks like a burn. Is there a heater in the tank?

hiya no there is no heater or anything heated around the tank it started as a little white bleb and has developed into this in about 5 days i cleaned the tank and filters yesterday and put the usual water treatments in - he is in a cold water tank 3ft x

He could've just been startled and bumped in to something -- is he a fairly strong swimmer? Can't really help what type from the pictures, though they do show the spot well. Watch it, and if it keeps getting worse consider moving him to a quarantine tank and treating with antibiotics to deal with any infection. It may sort itself out given some time though. Just do water changes and wait to see, for now.

That tank looks in the small side for a 9" fish. What size is it?

he is in a 3 ft tank at the mo but going to get moved to a bigger one (used to be in a 4ft tank but my daughter managed to crack it when she bumped into it ) so had to put him in a smaller one just for time being - he is just a plain goldfish and is a really good/strong swimmer - he has a habit of jumping though - will go to pet shop and get sum antibiotics in morning will show them these pics aswell
thanks xx
