I'd like someone to help me, please, identify this fish.
The girl at Petsmart said it is an "Emerald Cory", but I don't know.

I found out on another thread that he needs to have more of his kind to be happy, and I have a 10 gallon tank that already has too many occupants.

I'm worried that Petsmart won't take him back, and if they do, how will they treat him anyway. He's such a cool fish....

I also have 2 otos that need to be taken back to the lfs, and I don't know what their fate will be. Apparently the lady doesn't know or care that they need to be in a group of at least 4, because she was going to sell me just 1 but when I saw how little they are I took 2.

If I get a 20 gallon would this hold 4 corys, 4 otos, adding 3 neons to make my 3 a total of 6 neons, so they can school, and keeping the 2 guppies, 2 ADFs, 3 ghost shrimp and 1 mystery snail?

I'm going to attach a pic of the cory, hope it clear enough for someone to ID him. I took some pics with my cell phone.

I'll be back later to check for posts.... I have to run some errands

sounds good for the 20 gal. and its definitely a cory, most like an emerald 1.

hes how id stock your tank

4 emerald cories
3 otos
5 neons
ADF's
5 ghost shrimp
the mystery snail
2 guppy's

tank from the pic looks real good could i see a whole tank shot?

I'm going to be gone until around 9:45cdt, but when I get back I will try to take some more pics and upload them.

alright thx melody ;) as for your tank how does the stcoking sound? i thinkit would great to watch, lots of very active little fishes:thm:

That is brochis splendens. Not a true corydoras species. They get a bit larger than most cories (3-4 inches or so) but are still schoaling (and therefore need friends). If you return him to PetSmart, they will quarantine him, then put him back up for sale. Do not worry about his fate.

Thanks Evelyn80 and yonsu. I like the stocking idea... and I must find me a 20 gallon now. The thing I worry about with the Petsmart, is that if I take him back they will sell him again as a solo... poor thing.

I have a new concern.... my plants, which are fairly new in the tank, were showing the little bubbles, "pearling", on the underneath side of the leaves all the last week, but today I see no sign of any of that on the anachris or the other plant (don't know what it is.. it's in the pic can you tell me?)

I know this is an important sign of producing chlorophyll, but there is no sign of that on any of the plants... all day today and last night. The anacharis is looking brown in places. What do I need to do? What do you think the problem is?

I have the same FL w22 light that I started with.

Thanks for the help. I took more pics and will try to get them uploaded tomorrow.

I doubt that you will or had pearling with an airstone. You may have had some air bubbles or nitrogen bubbles from the water. To get goo pearling you would need lots of light and some CO2.

You do not need to have pearling for good plant growth.

And that is a Brochis Splenden and not a cory. They can be treated the same because they have same requirments. They also like to school like corys, but they do grow just a little bigger.

if you get a 20g, i'd go for more like 7~12 neons but yea, the stocking sounds good.

Evelyn, I like your theoretical stocking, but I have a couple of issues with it(with reasons posted)

5 emerald cories-a true school consists of 5 or more, generally
4-5 otos-same reasons
5 neons
ADFs
5 ghost shrimp
the mystery snail
2 guppy's-I would just get rid of these little guys or try to get a couple more who are the same gender. They can survive fine on their own but do prefer company generally.

:)
