Help identify plant

Hi. I was walking past a local pond here in Charleston SC and saw some really nice plants growing in the shallow area. They have some nice reddish color to the top of them.
I pulled two out to possibly put in my tank but wanted to check here first to make sure what they are. Here is a pic.
I just dont want something to grow crazy in the tank and overrun it.

My neighbor is telling me the pond is brackish water? Anyone know. I didnt taste it but I may on my next walk.
 
Its hard (for me) to tell from that picture. Could you get more light on it and maybe get a shot of the leaves from the top?
 
Is the pond owned, or supervised by anybody? What sort of setting is it in, like in a park or other public area? You might ask a worker there. Otherwise maybe the state Department of Natural Resources might have a website. Or the closest college or university. Plants can be very hard to trace online if one is not a botanist and knows the technical names for plant parts.

You might take some more pictures of it. Take it out of that object it's in, lay it out flat on a white sheet of paper so people can see the leaves, roots and parts in between. Once you get somebody to guess "It might be some variety of X" then you have a term you can search for. Good luck, it does look like a pretty little thing. :)
 
It looks lovely.

My first guess is some specie of Ludwigia, maybe L. repens x arcuata but I'm not sure since you say the pond is brackish.
 
Ah, sorry. I wouldn't try to taste it (post 2) but maybe you could borrow a hydrometer from someone. I'd definitely try to grow it though :)
