Help identifying algae - wierd looking.

One mroe question regarding water flow, whats the best way to orient the powerheads, Ive seen it many different ways. pointing UP to agitate the surface, Pointing DOWN to hit the rocks and sand. both from one side, one from each end to create a circular flow, ... whats the best way?!?

best way is not using powerheads...lol i used to be an advocate of maxijets and how wonderful they are...now that i have had the korailia wave propeller pumps ill never use another powerhead for flow. they evenly distribute flow in a more natural way. i prefer to set them up so the create counter and down flows form each other. then one at the surface maybe and another so that it just brushes the rock work.
here is mine and a link with more info on them

Well, now people are telling me it looks liek Dino, not Cyano. It looks liek a mixture of clear and brown "snot" when I scoop it out.

Not sure I even want to try and fight it in an empty tank, might just toss the rock, and start over.

Question is how do i sterilize the tank and equiptment before I start over?
Is washing it and letting it dry out for a few days sufficent? or do i need to wash it with bleach or something?

Honestly don't chuck your rock. You can beat it, I did. I had mine for 12 months before I even knew what it was (then I found this site). Here's a link to my thread which shows some before and after photos and how I did it. It's worth it in the end if you just persevere. You'll find a new admiration for your tank when you beat it :dance2:

One thing I will add: if you want to go for more clean up crew get more snails rather than crabs as I found the crabs don't touch it. I'd also go for larger snails. Just be aware of the amount of snails you've got as you don't want them to starve when all the "algae" has gone.

I agree...We have all gone through something while starting a tank. I think EVERYONE has had issues with cyanobacteria AKA Red Slime Algae. Don't let this one little thing get you down. Just keep trucking and you should get this stuff under control. As Niko has said add more powerheads and that should help ALOT. everyone has hit the causes of this stuff right on the head but the one thing most people look over is the current they have in the tank. Without the right current the tank will be un-healthy.

Except I don't believe it is cyano (red slime). I think its Dinoflagellites.
I added chemiclean. its been a little over 24 hours, and its gotten WORSE not better. with NO lights on.

I am gettign better at taking macro pictures though. here is a close up. Its almost net like.

Plus I have a powerhead directed directly at the spot I took a picture of, water flow seems to help it ...

Well sadly this stuff isn't going to disappear over night. It took almost 2 months for it to totally leave my tank when i first started SW. The best way to get rid of it that i found was adding a powerhead for more flow in the tank. There are a few other ways of battleing the stuff but you should only try one at a time or you would never know what was causing the problem to begin with. Try adding one more powerhead for starters. If that doesnt work check your lighting schedule. It is reccemended to have the lights on for 8-9 hours a day. This could also just be caused from high nutrient levels usually from the use of Tap water or over feeding the tank.

Well , no fish so no feeding, ive been on blackout for a week(though I did have them on for a few hours for a day or two but that made it worse so i stopped), and I filter my water through a 4 stage ro unit. all nutriens test 0 at this point.

And the areas with good water flow are the worst ... stagnent areas between rocks are perfectly clear.
