if you up your water changes you can just leave it in there until its gone. the snails should go nuts for it, and its great for their shells.

LOL. I tried to break it so that it wouldn't take as long to dissolve in the tank, which also means that it would last longer. Those suckers are hard!

the plain cuttlebone or plain plaster shouldn't affect the nitrates too much
Cherries are extremely sensitive to nitrates (snails too, but they are a little more resilient than the shrimp)

If it's shrimp only, a half dose of iodine can't hurt. Calcium is more mportant to molting though.
