HELP! major filter issue!

If power goes out.
Water level may drop in the unit ,Hobs may need to pour water in the top to get pressure going.

Cannister, may need to suck on hoses to get water in the hoses.

i had to clean the impeller even more. i thought i had cleaned it completely, but i took it apart again and let the impeller soak in hot water to loosen everything up. then i took a toothpick and just scraped away any and everything that looked foreign. i guess it was fine spinning when there was no resistance but had trouble when it was in water.

and i did pour water in the top everytime i tried to get it going. it wasn't until this last time that it actually started working.

Good job!

Good to hear. The impellers can get gunked up fairly easily. Luckily, these units only have on moving part; The impeller ;)

It may sound like overkill, but the best thing to do with HOB filters is to buy a 2nd identical unit in case one dies so you can move your filter media and, in this case, biowheels, over to the new unit. It is very common for them to have trouble after being turned off. Even though everyone loves AquaClears, I had one not restart after a deep cleaning of my aquarium one time, and I didn't notice for about 20 minutes. I'm pretty sure the motor housing would have melted soon. Yes, I know I should have checked, but I am usually focused on making sure the canister is working and evaluating my landscaping. Comparing older filters with the motor in the Rena SmartFilter or the Eheim Liberty filters, you start to wonder if perhaps some refreshing might be in order.
