Help me before I kill my puppy

Needed a dramatic title :). I'm serious about the help part though. My dog is a two year old chihuahua, and as of late, he refuses to poop outside unless its the perfect spot. I don't know what makes the spots right, but its very obvious that he has to go, he will circle and squat and then hold it and walk somewhere else and circle and squat and sometimes he won't even go. I tire of this after about 20 minutes and lately its getting a lot more annoying (try having "patience" at 3am :angryfire:). If he doesn't go, we'll come back inside and then he'll beg and beg to go out, yet once we get there, we repeat the whole circle thing again. Its getting to the point where something has to give. It seems to be every day I go through this with him. So if anyone has any dog whisperer-esque advice, please share.

PS: I love him to death and would never hurt the little guy. This just has to stop and I'm not sure how to make it happen.

Give him laxatives?
Maybe he needs more variety in pooping spots.
Take him for a jog down the road.

Maybe you need to take him to the vet to make sure nothing's wrong with him.

A blockage would be my suggestion as well, all it takes is chewing on something s/he shouldn't to cause one, and that's how my ferrets have acted when they've eaten something they can't pass. I'd take her in to a vet, or at the very least try something like Petromalt and then take her in if that doesn't help...it's a mineral-oil based hairball remedy for cats, but I also give it to my ferrets to prevent blockages in them since they chew up anything rubbery that gets left around (or they somehow find access to anyway). Good luck!

I agree. Get him to the vet just to make sure there's no obstruction or something.

Other than that, I can only think of the advice I got when potty training my puppy. Always take him to the same spot, wait 5 minutes (or less if he goes before then), and then go back in. Keep an eye on him closely, and if he shows signs of having to go (circling, sniffing like you said), then take him back out for another 5 minutes. It should teach him to poo or get off the pot, so to speak, as well as go in the same spot without searching and searching every time. I'm not sure that it will help though since it seems like he's trying to go but can't.

perhaps he may be blocked, but these guys are a bit over the top with COD
they are a bit weird my fold have one that was dropped off there 8 years ago and he's been a pain since but they love him,..
if this has just started or has gotten a bit worse over time,. monitor when he goes and size and consistency as the vet will want to know this,. but most likely he's just being a obsessive p i t a,... use a tie out for late night escapades and after he's done he'll wine and bark to get back in,..

make a pulley type thing where he can go where he want to, in perspective,.. lol and chill,..

barring anything wrong these guys learn to train us to put up with their stupid behavior,..
