Help me convince my friend his tank set ups are wrong!!!!!

"a 3 gallon tank with a external cartridge filter with a bubbler
there are 3 danios a tetra and a redtailed shark

2 goldfish in a 1 gallon tank with a bubbler

1 crowntail male beta in a 1/2 gallon cube"
danios-20 gallon
tetras(depends on what kind)
goldfish- a pond unless theyre fancy goldfish
shark-55 gallon
betta-5 gallon

Buy him a bigger tank off cl for his early/belated birthday... Cycle it for him and Tell him you'll steal any other fish he buys for it unless he's filling out the school of tetras :D

i've told this story before but my dear friend and next door neighbor used to own a pet shop... that included the sale of fish... a whole dedicated wall.... and still thinks it's sufficient to house a goldfish alone in a less than 2 gallon decorative bowl on top of her (working, gas) fireplace and do 100% w/c's including bleaching and scrubbing all the substrate when the goldfish pellets can't break the surface film for him to get at them.

she has practically attempted to tackle me for trying to do a w/c in the past.

i don't visit her home anymore since it's the first thing i see upon walking in the door.

some people are just insufferably ignorant to some things by choice.

if you can be instrumental in my success of opening her eyes to her ignorance, i'll be happy to visit your friend. :D

p.s. her philosophy is "if i can get a goldfish to live for 2 years, i must be doing something right... that's a record for me". however, i suspect the current goldfish has a lassie syndrome and has been replaced by identical fish several times in the last couple years.

I ran into a similar problem with a friend of mine, I know it can be expensive, but she had a betta in one of the stupid cube things, I told her for months to get something bigger, she said he was fine and tanks were too expensive. so I went out and bought her a new 2.5 gallon with gravel, and a plant, gave her an old air pump and air stone and gave them to her. and she called me up a week later and saw a huge improvement in activity. it can get a bit expensive, but if you can show him what it should be on a small scale, then maybe he will get the idea and upgrade to proper tank sizes.

Have you actually seen any of these tanks?

I dont think I have ever even seen a 1 gal tank.
Maybe he is just pulling your leg, or has the sizes wrong, for some reason people have a weird sense of what size their tanks actually is.

Its what the people at the pet stores give him.... He lives in the dorms at his school. so what he can have is limited there. i keep telling him to start a few jumbo tanks at home for his critters and only keep the betta at school but he won't listen.

Just says his fish are happy and to leave him alone because we can't see how happy his fish are...

The 1/2 gallon betta is not ideal, but with proper maintenance it is livable.

It might cost a little more, but a 5 gallon with a small school of Celestial Pearl Danio and maybe an oto would be a lot more successful that what he will be dealing with.
