Some would disagree with me, but I used to have gravel. I switched to sand and there was a dramatic difference in how my fish acted. I truly believe they prefer sand (it's their natural environment). The word "mbuna" means rock dweller. So, they would need rocks stacked so they have places to hide. As for hard or soft water, they need hard water. Plants are fine, it's personal preference.
Good luck with whatever you choose. It's good to see you do your homework first this time. I had to re-stock my first tank for the same reason. Wish I'd have done my research first.
