I have had my tank going for 3 months now. This last month I have had 5 turbo snails, 10 sally lightfoot hermits and 1 emerald crab. I have been waiting for my levels to come down since their addition so as we can put fish in it. However I have now lost 4 hermits 2 of which was over this weekend. That isn't all of my problem. I have MAJOR algae grow happening. I just don't get it. I do the 10 % water changes weekly. I use fresh water no tap water. I also wash up the equipment and change my filter. What the heck?? I have used the nutrifin Cycle also as a weekly maintaince after learning about it when my nitrites jumped. My PH and Amonia levels are normal. However my nitrites are between 0.1-0.3 and I can't seem to get them back down to 0. The salinity is in the normal ranges and the temperature stays in an around the 75 degree range. Also these issues have arisen since I added a 25watt marine compact florencent. Could this be a problem? Some one please give the advise that I am looking for. I don't want anymore deaths as we all know it isn't cheap and we would like to get fish at some point.

Thanks a bunch and look forward to the replies.

ok I have been doing some reading,.....is it true that hermits molt?? I know that my emerald does, but hermits?? Could it be then that they did that and didn't actually die?? How do you know?

ok i'll start by saying what size tank what kind of equipment(skimmers filters powerheads)how much live rock what and how much of a bed(sand or crushed coral)

Emerald Mithrax molt?! How often?!

Yes, hermits molt, and you'll see the molt in the tank (it'll look like a dead hermit out of it's shell - legs and claws, no body).

This is a pic taken a couple yrs. ago of 1 of my hermit molts.

Well thanks everyone for your input. After taking the 40 minute drive my nearest marine store I found my answers. I am so relieved to know that they weren't dead hermits! Phewf!!!

The guys at the store told me my algae is fine and normal,...green hair algae. I just needed to scrub it clean. They told me I have a very healthy tank so no worries.

Now to answer Redtailhemi's question I have the following,.....

10 gallon tank
maxi 900 power head
aquaclear 50 (200) filter
heater at a constant 72-75 degrees
no protein skimmer as it is a small tank and I do weekly 10% water changes, and the nano sucks ball sweat!
10 lbs rock (1 lb per gallon)
10 lbs aragonite (1 lb per gallon)

9 sally lightfoot hermits
2 electric blue hermits
1 emerald crab
5 turbo snails
1 rainford goby

Your opinion??

Thanks a bunch
