Well, let me just put on my fire retardent suit, hard hat, safety glasses and ear protection before I make a suggestion.....how about undergravel filters with reversable powerheads?...........incoming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reverse powerhead/prefilter/undergravel filter may not be a bad idea in this case, although I'm not a fan of undergravel filters by any stretch. They would do the job, but they can be a bear if you let them get filled with gunk.
What sort of substrate you thinking about? If it's sand, back to square one.
Slightly off topic but monthly maintenance of your UG filters is necessary and consists of reversing the flow down each stand pipe for about 20 seconds, I have a couple of HOB filters attached to the tank while I do this then leave it all to settle down for a few hours and remove/clean the HOBs. I had seven years on one 55g UG filters and when I stripped the tank down it was just root mass under the plates with minimal debris.
This might help deeleywoman with her decision making.
The fluval 4 internal would do this tank great !!! you can place it in the back corner inside the tank, then just put driftwood, and some plant if you want to hide it , Just pull it out and clean it every mth . You Will be fine. I have one on my 75 with only a HOB 250 magnum with it !!! *( for now ) has been working great for this mth .. till I get my canister back up and running . just so heavy !! *( rena XP3 ) ~~ But I belive that fluval 4 would be perfect for this tank ! You can also use the sponge filters, and also the reverse UG filter . All sound good.
why did i think you guys would just love this question?
the reason for the tight fit is that i am looking to put this in an alcove in my hallway that is exactly an inch and a half wider than this setup, and exactly 14" deep.... i'm trying to keep it out of the way because my husband is a big, clumsy oaf and most other places in the house i could put it, he'd likely bump his graceful butt into. i'm getting another tank because i'm setting up an invert tank, starting with two clutches of spixi eggs i unexpectedly received. i was going to buy a little 10 gallon tank, but the piece of furniture i was going to put it on now has me concerned it'd be top-heavy and prone to being tipped over by a curious cat- or the aforementioned clumsy oaf. so now, i'm looking at a bigger, sturdier setup, into which i'd move my current fish and decor, and doing the inverts in my current 16 gal.
my substrate is fine gravel, so an UG filter would maybe work with that, BUT i have khuli loaches, sooooo...... >.>
keep 'em coming; i'm intrigued by the variety of answers! now, going off to look up the suggestions made so far
I would go with two powerhead with sponges on the intakes. I am filtering a 10 gallon with one and it is doing a great job. Just make sure not to get too fine of a sponge or it will get clogged really quickly.
