help me save 4 fish from being flushed

A little off topic, but sometimes I have to wonder if people on craigslist will get them much better homes than where they started off.. but I suppose anything would beat a flushing!

I know of someone who has basically given up on the care of her goldfish and condemning it to die in its own waste, but given the widespread belief that they can be crammed into half gallon bowls, I'm not sure if it would be much better off with someone else..

Unfortunately I don't have room for any more tanks at my place. =/

Along the lines of what Raymond said, "condemning fish to die" seems to be a pretty popular thing to do.

I gave away a 12g eclipse tank to one of my friends complete with all the accessories he'd need, and fish.

He wanted to get it for his daughter. I went over to their house, set the whole thing up, showed him and his wife how to do all the routine maintenance and etc... it was sparkly clean...

Now a couple months later he tells me most of the fish are dead, the couple remaining have ich, and he's not treating it. Nobody is feeding the fish, they never clean the tank or change the water, and they dont' even turn the light on every day anymore.

I was pretty darn angry... I'm going to pick the tank up this weekend... he promised to give the fish some food.

Apparently the kid lost interest and they were just "Waiting for the fish to die" so they could put the tank away and forget about it.

- but if you can get a divider for your tank so your tetras and puffers can be safe or else lots of little tiny spaces they can get away in

did you recommend this b/c of the balas? They are generally very peaceful and won't go after other fish, even small ones, except fry. You would definately need to make other arrangements for the balas. They are very skittish fish, and won't do well in a small tank, I wouldn't go smaller than 125g for them, and even that is too small IMO. Other than their size and nervousness, they are great fish, very hardy, peaceful, they just need room to swim. I had mine in a 50g when they were smaller, and even then they would panic if you moved too quickly around the tank

yeah not b/c i think balas are that agressive just b/c i've heard the tiny puffer are so small every thing will eat them- and if those tetras were noens or the like.

i'm a believer in the idea "if it will fit in the fish's mouth it will eat it." i've never had balas tho so i only have that rule of thumb to go on.

i definately agree that thier long term home should be in a MUCH larger tank

side note:
i just can't stand the thought of live flushing or unnessasary euthenasia- people shouldn't be allowed to kill thier pets b/c they're bored of them!

Ditto Kyle,
You're not alone. I think most of the people on this board feel the same way. We'll bend over backwards to keep our little guys happy and healthy. As a side note, I swear a betta once said good bye to me before he died. He leaped out of the water brushing against my finger and then laid in the floating plants and I pet him. He was dead an hour later. He had been sick, but he was lucky because he was eating and swimming around fine until the very end. He did not have a long or lingering death which was good. But it was very sad.
Take care,
Mary.

hmmm... i wouldnt recomend petting your dieing betta... you probably freaked out the fish making it have its "quick death"
but on topic... where are these fish located, it would help us recomend possible people to sell to or whatnot... if you lived near me id go and pick them up....
