Help me setup my First SW tank!

i dont think you should have gotten the skimmer, probably a load of crap, would have been better off with an AquaC, 30 dollar skimmers of any kind are pretty much useless.

Why does everyone think you need an RO unit or DI unit, you can just got to your lfs or something and buy RO water at 40-60 cents a gallon, your changing around 3 gallons a week so that only 1.20-1.80 dollars

Other than that you seem to be getting off at a good start

My LFS doesn't use, or sell RO water. at least I don't think that he does, hard to ask, with him speaking Japanese and all. all I managed to get out of him on the subject was "tap water OK" his store is about the size a college dorm room, and packed from floor to ceiling with tanks.

as for the skimmer, well I think I am beginning to see what your saying. it doesn't even pull enough water to properly use the surface skimmer attachment. I'll probably have to remove it, in order to get any use out of that skimmer. and perhaps later I'll upgrade the skimmer.

do you have a major grocery store nearby? I know in america walmart sells RO water as well as most grocery stores at 50 cents a gallon, the normally sell it in those large 5 gallon containers that are used in those office waterers.

eh, perhaps some of the Japanese grocery stores would sell filtered water, but I don't know how I'd be able to ask them if it was RO or not. I'm just here with the military, and I do most of my shopping on base. they sell distilled water on base, in the 2gallon jugs, but I don't think that the "Tap water filter" is doing too bad of a job, I tested the water it put out, and everything was zeroed out, I'll use it for now.

ok, i was just trying to find a cheaper alternative

Well, a little update for you all. the "tap water filter" thing is actually working out pretty good for me. I just changed out the first cartridge, which means that one cartridge lasted me about 4 months. I am ok with that.

I added a couple of pieces of coral, and a whole bunch of stuff has just popped up out of nowhere in this tank, Macro algae, and a strange looking thing that I think is a nudi-branch. or maybe just a weird snail. I don't know, I'll try to get a few pics of it up.
