Ok, we had a "cookout" tonight, and my girl forgot one of her homework papers...she forgot the book too......so tell me,

A clownfish is coated with a slime that ________ it from the __________.

LOL, see that is what i told her! Although she was very persistent, refusing to go to be until I went to my "fish site" and asked my "fish friends"!! She did fall asleep, but my goodness...she has her "dads" stubbornness!! Actually, she has become interested in what I do here, and I think it was more the fact she was getting to ask a question at a place I go to.

I will show her the answer in the morning, before she goes to school...especially since she would not put the answer down before she went to sleep! It will tickle her I'm sure.

Thank you again!:)

Technically it doesn't protect it from the sting. It actually makes the anemone think that the fish is just it's own tentacles touching itself, so it doesn't trigger the stingers.

lol How cute! Tell your daughter we said Hi.

A clownfish's slime is composed of sugars, rather than protiens. This does not make the nem think that its own tentacles, rather the nem just does not recognise the clown as food, so it does not release nematocysts. It also mixes the slime from the anemone with its own slime which does erradicate the stinging element..So, from a certain point of view, yes, the slime does go towards protecting it from being stung...

As always, just my opinion of course... :)
