My crown tail female betta has been behaving very weird. She is in a 1 Gallon Tank. I have had her for 2 months now. All this while she has been very active and playing and eats like crazy and regardless of how many pellets always ate them.....

However for the past 1 week I am seeing a wierd behavior but I am not able to understand the problem.

I have now changed water 2 times in 1 week now...to make sure she is clear... When she showed symptoms she was due for a water change... Agreed my fault...

1) She is still hungry and eats well.... - Good sign
2) She keeps scratching her self a lot and it seems like she is trying to get rid of something... 3) I have not seen any obvious signs of Ick or velvet....
4) Her Abdomen (neer the egg spot) is slightly swollen
5) she is now becoming a bit sluggish...
6) Her feces is normal (brown) no white feces...
7) I am now noticing some very mild white layer on her body.. not sure if this is lack of color or something....
8) I added few drops of CopperSafe to check its parasites (Ick, Velvet etc)
9) She is still scratching and acting sluggish...

I dont want to lose her.... Can someone guide me.... How long does CopperSafe take? Can I try anything else....? She is still eating....

Why is her belly/Abdomen swollen. is it because she is full or something else?? I was thinking its constipation but she does go.. so not sure...
any help will be great...

PS: For 1 gallon what is the right dosage for CopperSafe. It said 1 teaspoon for 4 gallons.... and lasts one month... I assume 3 - 4 drops and its just one time correct?

could be the inital stages of dropsy. I dont know dont hold me to that but scratching is usually a sign of somthing and swelling is another concern. I dont know about coppersafe. if she's swollen in the abdomen do her scales stick out like a pinecone?

I'd stay away from copper-based meds. The copper will bind molecularly to your tank and NEVER go away, making your tank toxic to invertebrates and potentially fish (depending on how much copper there is).

What are you ammonia/nitrite/nitrate readings? Sometimes fish will flash in response to poor water quality because their gills are irritated.

Don't know about the swelling, but you could try fasting her for a couple days. Then give her a cut up, skinned pea.

No there is no dropsy yet as scales are not standing.... and I did a complete water change recently so the readings should be minimum..... I will check again tonite....

It definitely feels like she is trying to get rid of something.... and i feel it is velvet.... sometimes I feel she has dust on her... which I think is a sign of velvet.... How does CopperSafe work and how long does it take to cure?
What other treatment is best for Ick/Velvet/Parsites?

For Ich, I dont know about Velvet, I use the heat/salt method, but since you have a 1G tank-no heater, that won't work for you. If it's ich, she will be showing spots in a day or 2. I would just keep up with the water changes until you can figure out what it is. It can be stressful to keep changing up meds.

I've had success with Maracide in both velvet and ich cases.

Check out www.ultimatebettas.com I'm pretty sure that they have a section on 1 gallon doses for meds.

Good luck. I hope you can heal her up!

Edit: Ultimate bettas does not have a dosage chart, but I'll keep looking and I'll let you know when I find it again!

I haven't had any luck finding the link. That stinks because I just saw the page 2 days ago! I wish I'd bookmarked it.

Anyway, Ultimate Bettas has a ton of info on bettas. Maybe you can find some info there. I've also found some excellent sites surfing from Aquaria Central. Click on Species under the Freshwater category and then click on bettas and it should take you to the listing of websites.

Good luck!

Thanks Julie. I have not been able to find the 1 gallon dosage yet. I did register at UB and have posted there as well....

BTW, yesterday my wife went to the petstore where she bought the betta and mentioned the symptoms... the guy gave her Kordon Ich Attack. it seems a herbal treatment. I have not used it..... and it says its safe on all animals etc. Any one used it? Is it good? I wanted to get QuikCure but they did not have it and gave this to my wife..... I want to be sure its ok to use before I use it.....

My female died today. I tried parasite medications and fungal as well.. but I am not sure what killed her.... Really sad to see her go as she was liveliest fish when she was healthy.....
