Help, my hamster escaped!

When I found mine, he was in the same room as which he escaped. Most likely hes scared and will have found the closest hiding spot available. Check under everything! I have a small bookcase that sits directly on the floor, thing is it has an open space in the back where the hamster can get under the bookcase. So even tho it looked totally closed in...my hamster got under it.

I wish I could tell you how to catch yours..but my cat pointed out mines location when he got out..

Just a note if you havent already remove all mouse traps and rat bait if you have any out. As well as anything else that you can remove that may harm your hamster.

He hasnt gone far...you just havent looked in the right place (dont forget inside shoes too..). When you are done searching a room, close the door and leave a trap in the room just in case you missed him. This way you shouldnt have to search all the rooms just to have the hamster going between them..

Kept my gerbil in one of those tube equipped housing units; once a tube came loose and she escaped. Would see her every so often under the sofa looking out, or scurrying around the floor.

Tried setting up a ramp baited with food leading up to a bin; no go.

Finally after three days was watching the tube, saw her sitting in front of the fishie tanks (one was sitting directly on the floor) watching the fishies. She was so intent on them that I was able to sneak up and grab her.

She's no longer in that housing unit. Got a 10 gallon tank with a screen top for her. Stops the bedding and food remnants being scattered around also (my vacuum cleaner is having a break!

One thing too you could try is putting his cage on the floor with the door open in the room he escaped, or putting some treats in his ball and living it where it was at when you found it empty if the house search turns up nothing. Most likely this will work at night as they are nocturnal..

I use to have hamsters. Those tube openings and balls don't come open by accident. Hamsters can open them intentionally. I use to put a couple small pieces of scotch tape on the ball opening when I used it, and always had a few pieces of tape on the cage too (the one with all the tubes). Something to consider for future reference. It doesn't take much tape to keep them from being able to twist the "door."

As far as finding your escapee, I can't help you there. I only had that happen once, and found him immediately after the escape.

thanks for your suggestions and stories guys. I a bit nervous to start moving heavy stuff around, I don't wanna crush the guy but I did set a trap and close the door of the room he escaped in. I think I'll have a better chance of catching him this evening when he becomes more active. He's surely sleeping somewhere in my bedroom as we speak...

Mine would go on dog food raids before she died of old age. She figured out how to pop open her wire door and would go steal dog food. Our dogs love to watch small animals, so I was never too worried when she'd get out. I'd find her stash under the TV, behind boxes in the pantry, and once in a metal bowl under the oven.

I'm tellin ya check the undie drawer!!!!!!

I lost a gerbil one time. Found him in a mouse trap in the hot water heater closet...

another thing, when you bait the traps, I reccomend using peanut butter, as it has a strong odor and will attract the hamster.
