I hava 55g community tank, with asstd tetra/barbs. When I moved the tank to another place in the house, the neons lost probably 80% of there color(which I expected as I've kept them over 20 years). The blue and red were barely visible.
I put stress coat in(as always when I move the tanks) and let them be. That was 3 months ago and w/in45 days they were back to normal. It is their behavior that is the best judge of their health, not color.
Are they hiding alot? Do they dart to and fro or are they just "gliding". Do they hover near the surface? The answer to those questions will tell far more about their health than color variation.
Tetras, though beautiful, are not that delicate. Unless you beat them up in the move I wouldn't worry about the water difference. I have kept them in city water and in well water. Other than keeping out the chlorine have not treated the water.
Just A Thought, John
