Help! My tank is dying.

Well, the charcoal and water changes seem to be stabilizing my cesspool of death...I haven't seen anything else die, and my star polyps (at least those portions not overgrown with green algae) are starting to open up again. I think my green zooanthids are toast, though...they're still not opening up. My lobophyllia (which got totally bleached) is getting some color back, although I'm not sure at this point whether it's just algal overgrowth. I think it'll be awhile before I get enough guts to buy anything else at this point. Thanks for everyone's help.
you dont list your s.g.....hopefully 1.023 to 1.025...also check ph at night,,and at day is it at 8.00 + at night and 8.3 to 8.5 in the day?? are u running good carbon??? mushrooms and zoes are chemical demons at times and all that in a 40 needs carbon or reg waterchanges,,like 10 gallons every 2 weeks or so. What salt u use? do you mix salt atleast overnight? algae is feeding on something,,either nitrate,silicate,or phos. when checking for these,,use water from around substrate that been just a little disturbed,,also nitrate test kits are not reliable as they should be..check results againt diffrent test. hope any of this helps
My SG has always been 1.024 to 1.025; I mislabelled it as pH is my original post. Up to now, I've been doing 5% water changes every 2 weeks; more since the disaster struck. I've been using Marine Environment sea salt, with its little bottle of liquid components, and I've been pretty good about letting the new salt water mix and aerate for 24 hours beforehand. Up to now, I've been sampling water that I siphon from the sump tank, so maybe I'll withdrawing it from around disturbed substrate in my display tank. Right now, green algae is totally running wild, and I don't know why, as my phosphate has always been 0.
