Hi guys,

I m building my own DIY freshwater tank. I have decided on these specs, 180x80x80 cm wid 11-12mm glass thickness. Im on a tight budget so wanna know wot kinda filter shud i go for. I currently have a 300 litre (approx 65 gallon) tank and just a Aquis 1000 canister filter from AquaOne.

I plan on having a planted tank with my current discus and tetras. can neone help me build a DIY filtration system. Also what are the meanings of these terms and how do they apply to my new setup ---- Skimmers, overflow box, sump, WET/DRY filter......

What is the difference between sump and a filter. Can i build just one sump with a filtration system inside it or do i have to buy a separate filter.

I know i mite sound like funny, but am a newbie and i wanna try building my own fish tank....

Ne sorta help is Most welcome and appreciated.

Thanx

Take pics - nice to see another DIY tank builder here. To answer some questions:

-skimmer usually refers to a protein skimmer, utilized as a filtration method for saltwater setups, generally considered useless in fresh water.

-overflow box usually refers to either a baffle inside a drilled tank that water goes over before draining to a sump, or a hang-on-back (HOB) overflow box, a method for draining water from the tank to the sump on a non-drilled tank.

-a sump is just a remote filtration system, basically. It has water in it, a pump moves water from the sump to the main tank, and the water drains back down to the sump via either a drilled drain in the tank, or a HOB overflow box.

-a wet/dry filter is a biological type of filtration. Basically you trickle water over your filter media rather than having the media completely submerged (i.e. in a canister filter or power filter). A sump could be partially or completely composed of a wet/dry filter.

For filtration, you could set up a sump (that would be my first choice on a tank that size) and put a wet/dry filter in it, or you could use a few canister filters. If you are planning a high-light setup for plants using CO2 injection, a wet/dry filter might not be the best choice as the extra agitation due to draining and going over the media will gas off the CO2 much faster.

wow thanks alot for replying guys

Wow, i didnt realise it would be so fast that u guys would reply to my thread....

A big thanks

I will definetely tk pics n post them, I hope u guys can point out my mistakes if any n lemme know wot m doin wrong...

Now that i understand the terms a bit better, i think i'll prolly build a sump.
I wanna keep my water maintenance hassles to the least. With my current setup, I just change 30% of the water every 3-4 weeks. but in the case of this size getting a higher capacity filter seems to be really expensive.

Now In terms of effectiveness, can u suggest me the best setup. I plan on keeping a planted tanks with Discus fish and Tetras. For CO2 m planning on again making a DIY system itself. It seems effective and cheaper than getting myself a Cylinder.

Oh ya one of u was curious abt thickness, i used the tools on this site http://www.theaquatools.com/ pretty helpful.

Sump?? applicable??

Is building a sump applicable in a freshwater tank setup? or is it only for salt water tanks?

If no, then what kinda DIY filtering system can i build for my freshwater tank??

Anybody??
