Help needed from Comp Geeks

That is why I'm confused. The rest of the computers, as long as they have wireless cards, can access a wireless router. I even set up a few repeater/range extenders in my home to extend the signal to every area of the house.

and your neighbors, unless it's properly secured. ;)

Really?

So I could run a cable in each port and the wireless would still work for the kids comps.

Awesome.
yes.... though the more comps on wifi the slower it gets....

see here i ran the wires since i like the security of being wired plus the speeds....

great point.....

Most hubs and switch have one ethernet port that is specified as a bridge or regular and there's a mechanical switch somewhere on the device to change from bridging mode to computer hook-up mode and vice versa.

More than secured. I've got all the newer security features, WPA2 encryption, a hellish password, firewalls, router encryption, disabled ssid, etc. I don't think anyone's getting in ;).

Unless you're using gigabit ethernet ports, then wireless N can do better than standard wired speeds. I'm getting ~200mbps with mine.

I was looking to upgrade the router to a N series Gigabit.

Do I need to do anything to the comps or does it not matter. They are a couple of years old.

edit:
Looks like I don't need to do anything special

The N routers would be a good upgrade if you share alot of files, stream alot, or not happy with the ranges of the G router. For internet it would do nothing as internet speeds dont even come close to G.

And for your computers you would need to make sure all of them have N wireless cards because the router can only be on on one standard for example you have your N router but your computers have G wireless cards the router goes to G mode and gives you G speeds not N. This will happen if there is even one G wireless in the network I believe.

Id go with the Linksys hasnt done me wrong yet and trendnet has also been good to me.

I personally like the Linksys over the Dlink, one of my closet friends just purchased that exact Dlink model you linked, and its horrible. Me and my other friends hate going over to his house to play games or even browse the internet due to the lag. We all connect with G-based NICs, the D-link N adapter plays nice with it, but we havent tried other manufacturers N parts though, cause no one else has upgraded to N.

The router would be for gaming. Wife and kids like Guild Wars I like PS2 and the 360.

I was looking at getting this for the wireless aspect

wireless adapters

So that should cover it being on N and not G speeds. Am I missing anything?

I found PCI cards.

Ok guys I found out that getting a gigabit router was worthless as I can't pull that much from the net anyway.

I did upgrade to a N series Linsys though. My new question is since its still 10/100 can I use the ethernet cards I'm already running?

I'm running via rhine ii fast ethernet adapter driver.

To this point I haven't seen anything that says yes or no.

The kids comps were easy I just bought new wireless adapters lol
