Hey People...
How are all you doing? I just got a 90 gal aquarium + a wood stand, at an auction for 100 dollars. (Sweet deal:)) Well I thought so anyway. Anyway it came with what I think is an overflow, big black thing that takes up the whole corner of the aquarium with two large holes drilled into the bottom of the black box that I think is a overflow. I looked at a few sites and its looks like your suppose to put a filter on the bottom of this thing. I was planning on putting my discus's in this tank along with my plants with my hang on back filters. So what should I do use the overflow or my filters? Which is better the over flow or the hang on back filters and why? Will the over flow gas off more Co2? Do I need the over flow and the hang on back filters? I never had a tank like this until now so I have no clue what to do. I currently have an Aqua Clear and H.O.T magnum cleaning my 55 gal. I like the water to look perfectly clear all the time so I use the micron cartridge 24/7 in the hot magnum and I would like my new take to look the same! So please straighten me all out on this. Thank you for all your help :bowing:

Can you post a picture of the tank and overflow area?

I would use both! There's no such thing as water that's too clean. Using more than one filter is called polishing the water.

What should i put at the end of the accessory kit? I dont know if I have enough money to run both...

You could do a do it yourself sump that would not cost much at all...

Yup, overflow..the sustem is designed for a sump or refugium. if you are doing a sump the large hole is the drain the small hole for the return. there are actually kits you can purchase that will utilize this system.

it does look like this tank is set up for the kit tai95 mentions

the wet/dry sump is generally a huge bio filter..there is also some mechanical filtration provided with a floss type filter cloth(there are others like mats you can use) you can use an old aquarium fit it uder the tank in the stand. you can also use large tubs(check out diy for home made sumps) in general the water passes thru a filter media(floss) then thru bioballs..then to the return portion of the sump. a pump then pushes the water back into the tank..
you can add more filtration if you want but it may not be necessary.

I have a 75 with a sump..I added power heads to remove deadspots..I keep discus.

are you planning bare bottom or planted?? if planted there are other considerations.

if you decided you don't want the sump..get plugs to block the holes..if you add bulkhead fitting you should be able to screw in plugs if you decide to use a sump later.

BTW, that is a sweet deal for that tank.

I was looking into that but the way the power goes out around here, especially in the winter. I don't know if I would trust it not to leave 90 gallons of water on my floor. Is there a way to set them up so they have a security system on them in case the power went out? Yup I'm planing on planting it... I love the way the plants control my nitrates... it helps keeping the water clean for the discus's a lot and I wouldn't give them up for any filter but I would like to use the over flow being i have it...

you should set up a sump large enough to handle anything coming from the tank..install a check valve inline with the flow from pump. it should only drain what will coe into the overflow.
there are some other tricks too..I'm still learning some myself.
