Friends,
I'm looking at adding a Blue Hippo Tang to my tank but I'm worried about compatibility issues. My tank is only 75g and holds about 70-80 lbs of live rock. Not to mention that I already have a midsize Yellow Tang that seems to be the "king" of the community. Is it a bad idea to have both a Yellow and a Hippo Tang in tank this size? Would two of these "free swimmers" be happy/content in a tank this size?

My other fish in the tank include: 2 Clowns, 1 6-line wrasse, the yellow tang mentioned above, and a small clean-up crew.

Any other info on the Blue Hippo would be appreciated.

I'd say not. A blue hippo really needs 100 gals or larger. Your Yellow Tang is likely to give it hell as well in that sized tank.

PS. I wouldn't trust your sixline with any new additions, but I do have a real downer on them at the moment since mine made my mandarin take carpet surfing lessons!!

Completely agree with the rest. I personally wouldn't put a Regal in a 75G even if it was the only fish in the tank.. still to small of a tank. I haven't seen anyone personally be able to even keep a yellow tang HAPPY in a 75g or smaller for more than a couple years. I am sure there are plenty of people out there that have.. it is just I haven't seen it in person.

My personal opinion on tangs after witnessing many people try and keep them in a 4' tank is quite frankly, not enough room for any tang. I am sure when they are babies it is acceptable, but within a year the need more room because they grow so fast. I think a 6' tank is the minimum for a tang just because they need the swimming room. They are really nice fish so I see the lure to them, but to me, unless you have a small ocean of a tank, I just don't think they are an acceptable aquarium fish. I am sure Grins disagrees with me though. ;) We all have our opinions.. just take them all with a grain of salt.. mine included.

Actually I don't disagree with you. My tank is just now coming up on it's one year anniversary. While the yellow has been in there successfully for 10 of those I'd not recommend getting a yellow in a 55 because I'm well aware that Butters will need an upgrade. So in the meantime I keep a close eye on his behavior, provide him rockwork so he can swim the way yellows do, and make sure he stays healthy.

Thx for the input the guys. I wont add the Hippo. I feel like its my responsibility to keep these fish as happy as possible. I almost let my selfishness get in the way of that.

I'll save it for my next tank. Looking at somewhere in the 300 gallon range... or whatever my gf allows.

Really nice to read that. Kudos to you.
