My boyfriend has a 25 gallon saltwater tank right now and next year we're going to convert that to a 55 gallon and use the 25 as a sump. I want to buy him all the eqiupment to setup the sump, but I don't want to go buy the wrong things without asking the experts first. I know I need a pump, but what type and how strong should the pump be? My guess is that the water might have to travel a max of 4 1/2 to 5 feet upwards. Also, do I need anything to put in the sump? Live rock? We have a skimmer that goes in the tank, so I thought we'd hide that in the sump, but what else should I get for it? Any particular type of filtration or power heads? I'm really new at this. Any help you guys could give me would be excellent! Thanks!

What kind of filtration are going to use? Your standard bio-filter, berlin style tank, deep sand bed or the countless other ways you can filter your saltwater aquarium with. What you have to do is decide what you are going to put in the tank. If it is just fish then use your normal bio-filter by using the sump, maybe with some bio-balls, but if you are going to keep invertabrates you will need something keep nutrients down, invertabrates dont do so well with excess nutrients. First you have to decide which it is.
