HELP please - I'm confused about filtration

OK, you have me sold RW, but now I have a kind of stupid question -- what does the ceramic do? Is it a good place for the BB to live or does it help clean the water?? Do you change it on a regular basis?? OK, I lied on my previous post about only having one more question . But this has been VERY informative and helpful!!

The sponge and floss is mainly used to catch particles in the water, and it does hold BB on it. The only purpose of the ceramic is to have BB growing in them. The ceramic is porus and lets a LOT of bacteria grow in the tube, allowing for even more surface area exposed to the water - thus, better water quality.

But I did leave one part of your question out that I'm just now noticing, you DON'T have to replace them. I havent in... 3 years I'd say haha.

Its my understanding that most of the good bacteria are in the bio wheel of your HOB. That is what must be saving your fish when u wash the filter cartridge. I used to change my filter cartridge every month until i joined AC but now I dont and my fish are still alive!LOL.
