Help Please!! My temp is staying too high!!!

hmmm snow at the beginning of may and 90° temps at the end. Im in Saginaw btw. Are there any good shops down there? The choices here are limited.

there is one place "The Tropicorium" near Metro Airport in Romulus (www.tropicorium.com) they have literally thousands upon thousands of gallons of fully cured (and beautiful) live rock, as well as cured live base rock. They also have a large variety of captive (grown/bred/cultured???) corals. Their fish accomodations don't look as healthy as some I've seen, so I'm afraid to buy fish there. They are only open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you ever want to drive down, send me an email (cindymelchert@yahoo.com) and I'll give you good directions around the large blooms of orange barrels this season is so famous for.

as for Fish, there are two that I have found that seem better than all the others. One is in Westland and the other is in Livonia (both within 15 - 20 miles of the Tropicorium). The staff is (mostly) very knowledgable and helpful without being out to just get you to buy something and their tanks are clean and fish healthy looking. Let me know if you want more info on either of them.

Thanks again!

WBFG, I'd say 90F is too high for anything to be comfortable, have you tried fans?
Bobindy, my tank is running at a steady 84F right now due to the rediculously hot weather we're having. I use a glass top and the PC lighting probably contributes too, though the light is on docking mounts and the housing always seems cool to the touch. My fish and the few frags I have haven't batted an eyelash at the temperature, everyone seems happy and healthy so far. I wouldn't worry about 81F, sounds fine to me.

I have a idea. I dont knwo if it would work or not. But instead of using ugly eggcrate, could you get a peice of glass or plexi glass that has small maybe .25 holes all in it. Then have like a computer fan pulling the hot air out from under the tank? Or maybe blowing int the holes?

I'm confused

I was looking at the temperature ranges of some reef coasts and was amazed to see ranges from 61-86 degrees F. Obviously an abrupt temp. change would be stressful, but given the natural fluctuation--I'm just thinking it's funny that some people maintain the same temp year round. Any insight? I only have FOWLR, but my tank temp somewhat reflects the seasons because my house is not so well insulated (I live in FL). The fish haven't minded it for the last 7 years...
Wouldn't fluctuating the temp to reflect the seasons work better for their natural metabolism changes?

There really isn't a lot of agreement on that one. Some will insist that a constant temp is required because the animals are stressed by swings, and in closed environments, the change is not as gradual as it is in the ocean, and that the organisms don't react as well in the tank as they would in the ocean. Others say that minor swings (much smaller than the natural variation, from 74-83) are fine and don't cause problems.

I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. Some minor variation in temps are fine, but overall, I prefer to keep my tanks stable, mostly because it's one less variable to worry about if a problem does arise.

However, it's always important to remember that while our tanks mimic the ocean, they are not really that similar. Events that can crash a tank don't cause a blip on the ocean's radar screen--scale really does matter.
