I have a 6 gallon tank with my betta and 2 ghost shrimp in it at the moment (just to test how aggressive my betta is) and I'm going to completely redo my tank (put new substrate and plants and driftwood) I only have a half-gallon bowl to store my betta in while I do this (I'm sorry, I know it's bad but it's all I have). Should I put the shrimp in a seperate bowl of about the same size or include them with the betta?

It's been about 18 hours since the betta and the ghost shrimp have been together, so far. The betta was really checking them out when I first set them on the bottom, he's even nudged one out of his way and was sort of stalking them. Hoping he can co-exist with some friends so that I can safely move up to amano shrimp

if you have your betta in the bowl for less than 3 days you should be good!!! i would seperate the shrimp from the betta.

Everyone is always really helpful on here, I love it. Thanks for the help, and I realize water changes are going to have to be very frequent in that small amount of water.

I would make sure that I have everything ready for the swap, and then keep the betta in the 1/2g only while I am switching over. I would put the shrimp in a separate small container. You should be able to redo a 6g in under an hour, and then everybody can explore their new digs. :)

^ Yep sounds good. I guess a half gallon is a lil tight for everyone so use a couple of different containers, ensure you condition the water as if for a water change, and use the tank water to keep your filter going...i.e. get it in a big enough container to run it with tank water (top up with treated water as if per water change) to keep your bacteria alive.

Wait so, transfer the water from my tank into a container that can hold it all and get the filter to run in there still? Or am I misunderstanding this? I was planning on keeping the water but I was just going to do the change and then let it sit for a few days and get the water tested to make sure everything is ok. I was planning on water changes 2 times a week in the 1/2 gallon.

I just got mopani driftwood that had been soaking in water at my local fish store, think it will be fine as far as clouding the water goes?

Yep I would put the tank water in a similar size container, keep the filter running in that just to be sure to be sure. (eh begorrah lol sometimes my inner leprechaun comes out).

The mopani - what I would do is get it in a big enough bucket, fill full of boiling water, repeat couple of times a day for a few days.

The 1/2 gall - not following here. I thought you were going to redo the 6G and then move everything back in there ? The redo shouldn't take more than a couple hours no ?

Well, I'm using fluorite and it probably won't take that long, but I'm getting plants to put in there tomorrow, and I thought when adding the plants the tank shouldn't be filled. Maybe I'm wrong.

BTW, leprechauns are awesome (go to youtube and type in Mobile Leprechauns, it's worth it)

appreciate the help

No prob. I guess I would do as above re where to put anthing, change your substrate, then put the critters back in the tank with the filter. Take 'em out again when you get your plants, plant up, put the critters back in. I'd prefer to have them in a filtered tank than an uncycled, unfiltered bowl even over night, stress of the move notwithstanding.

Yes, leprechauns are indeed awesome :D

begorrah.

Oh man, that sure seems a lot easier... I was thinking I needed to remove all the water each time, rather than just when changing the substrate. I don't know why I had that idea, thanks
