hello, i'm new here with goldfish. i recently set up a 30 gal. hex for my wife, she loves goldfish. after the tank was cycled with filter media from another established tank, we added three small ryukins on dec. 28, 2006. they were all doing fine, eating and swimming all around until this sunday when one of them was listless on the bottom. water parameters were all fine. the one finally died on monday. any ideas?

For starters, that tank is too small for 1 ryukin. Anyway Ryukins are sensetive fish, did he/she develop a rounded apperance? This is dropsy. Did he at anytime swim upside down? this is swim bladder infection.

No it's not too small for one Ryukin. This is a fancy goldfish that grows to about 6" and not a Comet or Common that will exceed 12". Where do you get the idea that his tank is too small?

your tank is too small for 3 ryukins, you could fit at most 2 in there, I personally would only put one.

need more info. any raised scales? spots? anything?

30 gallons will be okay for your 2 remaining ryukins as long as you overfilter it by A LOT.

thanks

i know we were stretching it with 3. i have an emperor 280 on this tank, really keeps everything clean. the one that died was swimming kinda sideways but most of the time he was just laying on the gravel. when i added food, he did try swimming to mid level like the other two but did not eat. maybe he was not a well fish to begin with. the other two are doing fine. will only keep these two now.

I'm sorry about your loss. I'm glad you have 2 left and that it didn't seem contagious. Have any pictures?
