Hi guys,

I found a bulge on the body of my betta, on only one side of his body. His scales are raised in that area. Pls refer to this photo, I've highlighted the region that's got the bulge...

According to the Betta Anatomy, it is within the area of his swim bladder and kidney...

There are no other signs, other than a single raised bump area and raised scales in that highlighted region...

Does anyone have any idea what this bulge is? How should I treat this condition?

Thank you so much for any help.

I suspect it is internal, I doubt you want to do surgery? Cancer or cycts...It happens.
Only other thing I can think of would be an encysted parasite, but if it is that large, chances are killing the parasite will kill the fish....

I am sorry.
That is just my opinion, I hope others can give you more hope or a cure for something I've overlooked.

On a good note, if it is cancer or a cyst, there is a chance either could go dormant...

I just want to bump this up to see what other people have to say on this, it is very interesting.

I guess I'm just not seeing it?

In any event, as with any unknown, continue to monitor for a few days and mark any change. As always, make a particular effor tot offer prestine water conditions.

Obviously, bettas are well known to develop bloating and other similar issues, but in this case I'm just not seeing anything from the image.

As for a localized bulge itself, this can be caused from a number of factors. Clearly there is no injury, so any bulge that is present would be internal. As an aside, I have seen adult Angel hammer each other aggressively enough to cause "bulging", but this goes away quickly and is small (mouth size).

Other causes could be parasites, cysts, cancer or the beginnings of constepation, bloating, etc. Just keep a close eye and mark any changes over the next 48 hours and keep us posted!

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

ct-death, the pic I posted is actually of him normal, I tried taking a pic of him now but it doesn't show up well, either. They are only raised scales that make it look like a bump is appearing on his body. I could see the bump if I look from the top, and on the side when there is some light showing on his body.

Atm the bump doesn't seem to have grown, nor look any smaller :S He is acting normally... I suspect 2 things:

1) the current in my tank has been high for a week or so, and a couple of times I found him sleeping "curled" in a cave... so that his head was beside his tail fin... I'm wondering if it's possible that resting in that position could do some sort of damage to that region? Causing it to bulge out on the one side, where he has "folded"..

2) we used to have a danio who seemed to have large belly region... he passed away after living for a year or so, and then a year later another danio passed from what looks like a red mark on his belly - his belly was also a slightly big when he passed.
It doesn't really make sense because the Betta has a swelling only on 1 side, and it is in his swim bladder/kidney/possibly testicle region...
