Help refine my son's fish plan.

Hello all,

After seeing the few tanks I have setup my son wants to get a 10 gallon going for his room. He really likes the Serpae or Flame tetras. I was wondering if anyone had a good idea of stocking around those. I was thinking maybe a couple dwarf gourami's. I swear i've seen dwarf flame gourami's at Petco here in town. But that was just my thought. No betta though, we have 8 of those already =).

Serpaes can be pretty nippy if they are not in a large tank... I'm not sure a gourami would be safe :eek: !! What about just a school of serpaes and some corys? Or do you want more kinds of fish?
 
No we are definitely open to suggestion. Just a big school of Serpaes with a few bottom feeders would look cool as well. How many you think would work. I want to be safe and of course stock so that they can grow and stay comfortable without having to relocate them.
 
I think 6 would be ok, and 3 or 4 corys. Maybe even more serpaes, but I think 5 or 6 would be safe for sure. You could always start with those and use your own judgement as to how they act and how much room they seem to have if you could get more. You could also throw in a small snail, just to add something else to the tank, I really like mine, hes very active :p:
 
ottos are good too.
If you get a small school of corys be sure to get a type that stays small.
the ones that2 or 3' are too big for a ten gal.
 
I've come to the realization that 10 gallon tanks aren't well suited for tetras, they just aren't very active in such a confined space. White cloud minnows and rasboras are quite active no matter where they're stuck. I wouldn't recommend a pair of dwarf gouramis in a 10 gallon tank, they may get territorial with each other. Honey gouramis, however, are even smaller than the dwarf and I haven't seen them display the levels of aggression in their larger cousins. For cories, the only ones appropriate for a 10 gallon are the pandas and pygmies because they stay small.

Here are a few suggestions:

1 dwarf gourami or betta
6 white cloud minnows
4 panda cories

2 honey gouramis
6 harliquin rasboras
6 pigmy cories

=============

4 wag-tail or mickey mouse platies
6 panda cories

=============

6 male fancy guppies
6-10 pigmy cories

=============

6 rasboras or white cloud minnows
a pair of shell dwelling cichlids
