I got a 10 gallon (or so) steel frame tank with a slate bottom too! I just filled with water today to see if it holds water and it has a few leaks. It had the cream colored sealant in between the glass and steel. I was able to get the bottom slate off and will be replacing the glass panes as well because I broke them when trying to get out. I would like to seal the tank using the original methods (glass to steel). I just don't know what to use. I'll be following this thread!
Also, I want to keep the slate bottom because it has bulkheads! The tank has a label and was made by Jewel in Chicago.
