HELP: Setting up a 10gal sand tank.

You could get a pair of rams for a ten gallon. You could keep them with other fish too, because they are peaceful. IME though, they like a planted tank with lots of cover.

I don't use a prefilter with my sand either. I just "wash" it really well when I set it up. (OK, I learned the hard way to do this, but I do it now!) Put the sand into a bucket, put in water, stir, dump off dirty water and repeat a lot of times.

It's a lot easier if you have a siphon, but stiring and dumping will work too. I don't get any of that silty floaty stuff now even when I accidently siphon up some sand. The sand that comes up into the siphon immediatly settles if I lift the siphon out of the water. And I use a python, so you know I'm picking up sand a lot!

I converted my son's 10 gallon Cory tank from gravel to sand. I didn't fit a prefilter and for the last 2 or 3 months it has been doing fine. The six Cories have fully grown back their barbels which were starting to shorten from scavenging through the gravel.

Things that will stir up the sand for fresh water are Kuhli loaches, Cories, and malasian Trumpet Snails.
all are great for a sandy tank and will stir it up very well.

My snails do a great job of stirring up the sand. I never have to do it my self.

How about some shellies Tip ? Now those are a cool fish ! You could have a few males and some females in there and the sand will be fine with them. They love to move things around and are always redecorating. They will most likely do a great job keeping the sand sifted around too.

Go ahead contact them, go to a few meetings, I am sure they have auctions, talke to other members, there will be a way for you to get those fish.
