What's your definition of noisy? Mine makes noise but not enough to be annoying in a quiet room. Small bursts of bubbles sounds right. I think the reason the airstone isn't working with the system is the check valve. You need a little bit of pressure to get past the valve and the pressure from the fermentation alone, might not be enough. The diffuser, I think, works because of Bernoulli's principle, like those oldstyle perfume atomizers--so the water flowing past the CO2 tube inlet creates a negative pressure or suction in the section of the tube between the connection it makes to the diffuser and the check valve. That suction along with the pressure created by the gas on the other side opens the valve more easily...but I could be wrong.
I was looking around the net to see if Hydor sold the diffuser that comes with the NRG system separately, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I think it would work well for you. The housing is really small and it's totally quiet. They do include the same diffuser in their 'natural' NRG system, but you'd ended paying about 40 bucks for just a diffuser. http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/pro...rce=googlebase&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=216611
