I have a sick cory cat which I have asked for help in treating previously with not much feedback. it started with what looks like fin rot. I had been treating with triple sulfa and anti fungal meds. The fish did not get any better so i followed that with furan-2 which is supposed to be for tail/fin rot. However, now it seems the dorsal fin is gone and whatever the infection is has moved to the scales below the dorsal fin. The fish looks horrible now. I have had him 5 years and am very distraught. I have hiom in the container ready to euthanise.

is there anything i can try at all or should I just do it?

If i had to kill a fish i would catch it in a net put it in a plastic freezer bag then belt the bag off something hard, one quick blow kills the fish instantly. No more pain, no slow painfull death slowly freezing to death.

Ok, what other fish are in the main tank with the cory?
How long has it been like this?
Does it seem to eat and swim good?
Have you tried a QT tank when treating or did you treat the whole tank?
Did you remove the carbon from the filter system when you did the treatment?
Can you post a picture of the fish, it may give us a better idea.
What are your water prams?
Are any other fish sick or has there been recently?
How often do you do water changes and how much do you change?

well, i answered all of this when i origionally posted about the fish. The water params are fine. no ammonia or nitrite and nitrate is less than 15ppm. it came from a 120 heavily planted tank. all other fish are fine. I put him in a QT tank where i was treating gourami for an ulcer with marcyn and marcyn 2. then i switched to triple sulfa and anti fungal. he is on his last leg now and i think he is about to die, but i cant seem to kill him hoping something would work. he is now being treated with furan-2. I have been doing water changes in the QT tank every couple of days.

His dorsal fin was the only thing affected, but that is about gone and it looks like its affecting his scales now. most of the scales below the dorsal fin look like they have been sparated from the body I have never seen a fish look this bad. Maybe hes just old and cant fight this off, i do not know.

I went out today and got tetracycline and melaflix, pemaflix, but since i am in the middle of the furan-2 treatment i dont want to add those.

the gourammi seems to be getting better, but i am not sure,. hes had an ulcer for a month now. it always looks better and then blows back up. The ulcer is very red, but i see no white around the edges.

Ok, so I had a look at your other thread. I would take the advice that was posted on that thread. liv2padl is very knowledgeable in this area of things. The other advice was also worth checking into. If all else fails and the fish itself seems as though it is suffering too much and there is no other way then you can euthanise it. Cories seem to be harder when treating then most other fish.

Something to think about is that the cory may have been nipped and when you put it in the QT with the Gourmai the infection from the Gourmai may have gotten into the open sore on the cory. Gourmais at times like to nip so this may have happened in the QT simply making things worse.

As for euthanising the cory, best bet is to take a good size rock and crush the head. If you can't handle this then putting the fish in, I believe, clove oil is the next choice. Both are the least painful for the fish.

I thought I was listening to the advice by trying the triple sulfa and anti fungal. My gourami never bothered the cory cat, so i dont think that was the problem. I still don't know what is wrong with the Gourami. its just a red ulcer with no white around it. Evrything I have read ays to treat it with antibiotics, which i have, 3 different types with no results.

The cory cat died today on its own. The gourami is still alive and kicking. i am going to try the tetracycline next and then the metaflex. if that doesnt work i dont know what else to try. i have litterally tried everything on my fish store shelf and spent over $50 for a $5 fish.

Thanks for the comments, but it seems i really have no luck with sick fish. i have never been able to save one.

I'm sorry for your loss. Sometimes some fish just can't be saved, you can try everything but it just may not work. All you can do is try and hope for the best.

I do hope that things will work out and something that you try will help. Good luck.

Sorry for reviving this thread, but the alternative options than clove oil, sent shivers through my spine.... Never knew people used brute force to euthanize.

:eek3:
