So last night I was watching the fish in my g/f's 80 gallon tank. It has about 15 zebra danios with 8-10 gouramis. It often amazes me just how big the LF Danios have gotten (they were bought small for starters in our other tanks). So I happen to notice one danio in the back and at first thought it was pregnant. Looking at it closer I started to wonder if there was something wrong with it, since I know very littel about the danio spawning process. It has a VERY swollen tummy ( like almost round) and the bottom of it looked reddish. Also, what looked at first like it was almost fuzzy I am now wondering if it was in fact scales sticking up since it is so swollen. Before you ask, no I unfortunately don't have pictures although I know they would help immensely. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Sounds like dropsy. Are the eyes popping out as well? I'd suggest isolating it immediately and try epsom salts as treatment. There may or may not be success in treating dropsy. The causes are hard to determine and since it happens internally, remedy is difficult. What food do you feed them?

my main concern is wiping out her tank of gouramis. that would be really REALLY bad.
They get flake food with dried blood worms and frozen ( although I always thaw it first) daphnia every few days for variety

That's why I mentioned that the fish must be isolated immediately.

I have an empty 10 gallon that I think is going to immediately become a QT tank. Is it safe to assume I don't need to concern myself with emptying it completely? Right now it still has the UGF in it and the remnants of the gravel that didn't get moved over to the 20XH. can I just fill it and hook up the air pump? or would I be better taking out the UGF and putting a HOB filter? I got a new aqua clear for x-mas for the 20 XH but I am still running both ( the new A.C and the old 10 gallon generic that come with teh 10 gallon kit) on the 20XH, although the generic one has a fliter that has integrated carbon. I know it waill take meds out, will it affect the salt? How much epsom salt?

epsom is normally used as a bath/dip and the fish are usualy only subjected to it for 15-20 mintes per bath. dosing varies up to 3 teaspoons per gallon.
epsom acts as a laxative. the idea is to make the fish poo

how old are the danios?

6 months ? At least that is roughly how long ago we got them when we first got the aquariums. Don't know how old they generally are when you get them from the fish store..

So I don't just dose the qt tank?

no don't dose the qt with epsoms.

then this osn't the route I want to go? or should I isolate it, and then have ANOTHER tank for the "epsom bath" part?
