Just wanted to let everyone know that Vern has made a complete recovery. Thanks to everyone for your help and encouragement! (I'd post a picture, but I can't figure out how to keep the glare out.)

Hold your camera at about a 45 degree angle to the glass and turn off the room lights. It works for me.
Glad to hear your little guy made a full recovery! 
I am not sure I'd worry about the one colourless fin. My betta had two blue pectoral fins (the small fins on each side of their body) and they both turned a clear colour about four months after I had him.
