Help the victims of Katrina!

I heard Baton Rogue is blocking off from any more people coming in. My friend said her area is loaded with people from Mississippi as well. She works in BR and said the drive is terrible. Gas stations are backed up big time. She's still without power and was told it could be up to two weeks before she gets it back.

Now what I worry about, is if these thugs aren't controlled, will they try to spread out to the surrounding areas where people don't have power?

From what I last heard, they told the police to stop doing search and rescues and to try to control the looting problem. I had no doubt it was gonna become violent. That's just the kind of people we are. Sickening.

I donated to the Red Cross today. I'm not bragging, I had told my grandma earlier today that I really wanted to help but I was afraid to donate money so I discovered that they were also accepting food. (the money thing scares me because I'm not sure where it actually goes. we live about an hour and a half from Houston and our church has taken in around thirty families. my aunt has taken in dogs and started collecting dog food for pets that have ended up in all the shelters here because their owners can't keep them now for various reasons. yea, at first I kept saying why should I help anyone that chose to stay until i discovered that some of the people that stayed were poor and stuck. on the other hand, everyone that left and lost homes still need our help of course. I'm a major history buff and the thought of NO being destoyed makes me sick. You just can't rebuild those buildings, it's not the same.

I just read that the city will be closed for three months. That means three months without a paycheck for most of those people. Plus the huge hotel and food bills. My family would be bankrupt.

This is from my friend in La. She lives close to N.O., and works in B.R.:

The big problems now are the gas shortages and the swarms of refugees in our town. There are families sleeping in parking lots with children and pets. So many of them have nothing but what they packed. There has also been a rash of crime in the area. A co-worker, whose sister works in payroll at the hospital, caught someone in our parking lot trying to steal gas from her car tank. There are people being robbed in area parking lots and the traffic is a nightmare!! It took me a little over an hour to get to my place of rest last night.

The situation only promises to get worse and area law enforcement has been working round the clock to try and control the chaos. We ladies at work are sticking together and our doctors are on top of beefing up security for us.

Yep. Surrounding areas are being effected big time. What the hell is wrong with us Americans? This is so d*mn sickening!

For some the problem is desperation and hopelessness. I am a church going, God fearing, hard working, honest person but I don't want to think about what I would do if Mrs. LongTime, or my triplet grandbabies, who will be three in October, were dieing in front of me. I know what I'd like to think about myself but...

For others it is something different. There are those who are just "me first" kind of people. Some were criminals, or at least crimanally minded, before disaster struck and this has just become their excuse.

They are talking about rebuilding the city in another location. I hope that's given serious consideration! The cost of making the current spot safely livable would be an enormous burden on every single taxpayer for many years. Sorry, but I do NOT think that's okay.

Somebody Mentioned that Galveston used to be the biggest city in Texas before the unnamed hurricane. I have family there, and I can remember when I was very young visiting my Aunt and Uncle to make sure they were okay after a hurricane(I don't remember which one). Their house had a water line a few feet up all the walls. It's weird because I was so little I only have fragmented foggy memories of what took place. Katrina is probably going to affect my husband's job search too. We've been hoping to move to Texas, but the already limited job market will be glutted with people who aren't doing a long distance job search. (Sigh) I would definately be in favor of moving New Orleans. What a task and a challenge, and an opportunity.
