i just bought a piece of lava rock and i just want to know the process to help it from not leaching. I have been soaking it in hot water for a few hours already after buying it and will continue to do so for a few days.

i have seen some red crumbles and dye at the bottem of the bucket after only a few hours...

any precautions i should take using lava rock?.

suggestions are greatly appreciated

if your 'lava rocks' are leaching DYE, then theyre not real lava rocks. where did you get them?

i got them from petco.

it just looks like a red tint at the bottem of the bucket.

i rinsed it out then i resoaked it and i dont see it this time..

so it wont turn my tank water red tint?

im about to put my rock into the aquarium....any last minute warnings or help to do this...

thanks

The red at the bottom of the bucket was probably just dust off the rock. Real lava rock is naturally red, not dyed.

Yep, the red's probably just dust and little shards. Petco doesn't sell dyed lava rock, just expensive lava rock. Hehe.

it was like little crumbles of rock so prob was dust.

Your not kidding about the price. A little expensive for a rock haha

I was thinking of doing something with lava rock and sand for the aquascape in a 29g. Could you use that lava rock for gas grills? I know it would need to be rinsed really well it's about the size I'm looking for.

Later,
Dave
