help w/ dwarf hairgrass

i ordered 2 nice bundles of hairgrass from fosters and smith about 2 weeks ago, along w/ an anubias nana.

the hairgrass has not rooted in either of my tanks, one sand and one gravel, and has become covered in a black algea.

the anubias' rhizome rotted killing half of the plant, ive got a small surviving section of about 3 leaves and 1 meristem anchored w/ 1 plant weight. i thought this stuff was pretty hardy

is there anything i can do for either plant?
 
Did you plant the hairgrass as a bunch or thin it out into little clumps? I bought one pot of hairgrass about 2 weeks ago and split it into 4 different bunches, then planted each about 1" apart. There were some yellowish leaves when it arrived, but they have greened-up and each bunch is looking well. The root systems are not full at all, but I know they are at least somewhat rooted because my male dwarf gourami is fairly forceful about his gardening. :cool:

As for anubias, I'm not familiar with them, but I do know that they should not be planted (the rhizome should be left exposed).

i seperated all the grass into about 6 or 7 bunches and weighted them down on the substrate. same w/ the anubias, i did not bury it, just plant weights.
 
Is this in the same tank as your other post? What type of substrate, lighting, fertilizers, CO2? I can perhaps understand the hairgrass not rooting if the substrate is too large and nutrients/lighting/CO2 are low, but I am perplexed by the rotting anubias.

I won't get around to this forum again until tomorrow night, but there are lots of knowledgeable people that frequent, so you should get a response before then.

You could also check out http://www.plantgeek.net/, they have an excellent forum with tons of information. Search for hairgrass, anubias, rhizome rotting, whatever works.

half of the hairgrass is in the 55(gravel) from the other post and half is in my 10(sand) breeder for 2 rams.

If by the above numbers, '55/29 - 150/20w' you mean that the 29 has only 20 watts, you are not supplying enough light in that particular tank. 29's are relatively deep (top to bottom) tanks and need more light, preferably CF to penetrate to low plants like hair grass.
Also, you need to bury the entire root systems on the hair grass in order for them to take root. Plant them so that the crown (the place where all the leaves meet) is just above the gravel surface.
If you weighted down the Anubia and didn't bury it, it should take root eventually if it is left in the same spot long enough. I would add another weight to it to hold it down in one place. It probably had a little rot on it already when you got it or it I don't think it would have rotted on you like it did.
You are not dosing a balanced regimen of fertilizers either, but shouldn't need a lot of them as your lighting is fairly low and you are injecting DIY/CO2 with what sounds like a relatively light plant mass. You are dosing K and Mg, and need to balance that with P (Fleet's Enema), N (KNO3) and some traces (Flourish or equivalent).

Are both lighted with NO Fluorescent (NO= normal output, as opposed to CF=compact fluorescent)?
If they are NO, you have low/moderate lighting in each tank and moderate fertilization would be called for. But you really need to dose a balanced fert. regimen as I mentioned before.

sure thing, im not buying an enema though! theres got to be other sources of P and isnt N present in the tanks from fish waste?

i forgot to mention that ive got stocks of flourish plant tabs and replace them every 6 months.

got a link for a balanced fert regimen? i can only find dosing for epsom and Nusalt
