I am setting up a simple 10 gallon tank with water at a ph of 8.3. I am also not planning on using a heater so the temp. in the winter will be about 68 degrees. Any ideas for some simple species? This tank is as much for the simple joy of looking at fish as it is for having special species of fish.

or live breeders such as guppies, platies and mollies.
Not in an unheated tank. No. They are tropical and will die.

White clouds are best, as liv2padl posted.

guppies and related mollies could deal with the high ph if aclimated, though usually kept at warmer than 68* could survive a period of those temperatures.

you just wouldn't be getting breeding as much with the cooler temperatures. Adult fish would be fine.

As long as your water change temperature isn't that much different from the current tank temps I think things would work out.

Mollies are quite amazing and can live in a wide range of water conditions. I keep 3 Black Mollies with my Green Spot Puffer. The pH in that tank is 8.2 with a specific gravity of 1.015, they've grown into some of the nicest ones I've seen in these conditions.

Why would your water be 68 degrees?

I don't use a heater in my tropical tank and anytime I look at the temp its around 76-78.

My house temp sits between 70 nite to 74 day.

Well, unlike South Carolina, we don't have such warm weather in Wisconsin. Our heating bills would be exorbitant if we set the thermostat at 70-74 degrees.

Very understandable..I didn't even take into account where you might live.
