help with 3D background, shading, and final coat.

Sorry, I just cant picture the color you are talking about and I grew up in the 80's  . If you still need it once you can upload that image, I'll see what I can do. I have that file saved and shouldnt take too long to come up with something.

Another thing to think about. If you cant paint the background to match your castle. Use the same paint that's on your background and paint the castle. Just a thought.

for $80, i ain't touching that thing with my artistic stupidity :)

I will hopefully have the picture tomorrow sometime. Should be able to upload it then.

Hi Res pic though, so if it turned out clear, then it should look identical to the colour on the castle without many variations.

wow those colors are exactly what I did. First time around I didnt put enough dye ("buff" color) and it came out like the first (original) pic. Then I added too much and it came out like the red one. now the third time... voila I got that other color, more or less.

Just hours ago I did some "painting" and tried to make it not look like a mess, although it might turn out ok. In response to your post on my thread, I'll try and put up some pics tomorrow, for I'm letting it "cure" naturally outside (its colder and humid this week in LA for some strange reason).

My advice, dont think too hard and let yourself have fun... try sculpting some random things with excess cement or throw it at a passing cat. with DIY you can only get better... usually.

ROFLMAO

Here is the colour of rock on my castle.... overpriced piece of art that it is.

And the full piece, half of it is dry (you can see its almost white) and half was just coated.

Well, I thought on this for a few hours now. I dont see how I could even come close to replicating that scheme onto the image of your background. It would take a more skilled graphic artist than I. There's at least 4 colors involved with that castle that I see. Blue, green, maroon and pink.

As for actually painting it to match the castle, I wish you the best of luck. If it were me, I would go with a solid color. However, a paint shop "may" be able to match those colors if you take the castle for them to use.

Sorry, I cant be more help.

nah thats cool dude.

I know ill never be able to match that exact colouration, not in a million years, no matter how hard or how many times i tried lol, I just need to think of a way to make the background not look like an entirely different rock structure altogether..... im not making sense i know :)

anyway yeah, the original issue still remains.... im not sure what to do about the colouration of the rock.

Clearly i will need some paint, and i was thinking of going with a dark red, roughly the same colour as the castle, and a black or dark grey, and sort of dab it on all over the piece, not really sure what sort of brush to use, or maybe instead some sort of sponge, like them chicks on design shows always use for doing some odd texture or pattern to peoples houses that always looks like it belongs underwater heh.

Ok here we go with some pics that I did:

Above is the back piece. Most of it is from the styrofoam from a 7-piece pasta plate set hence the unusual shapes. You can see the various layers/colors which dont look too bad, as well as some seashells I put in at the last moment.

Above is a closeup.

Overall b/c of the weird shape of the foam, it looks more like an abandoned industrial lot than a natural landscape. Still have to glue it into the tank. The front piece is done too, but I didnt take any pics of that one.

The third pic is kind of blurry, but is another look.

thats pretty decent looking.... almost like a sandstone.

I would say it does indeed look like something that nature formed....

i guess im just going to buy 3 small cans of paint, to roughly match some of the colouration of the rock on my castle.

Paint a solid layer of whatever color you want the majority of it to be, then once that is almost dry take some powdered paint in your highlight colors and brush it on gently. Since it's powder it will fill in some of the crevasses but not all of them. You can dry brush several colors to get a more natural look.

hey thats a good idea.

Where would i buy these powdered paints, and what would they roughly cost? I wouldnt need much of them.

I do believe that this background would mostly be that red colour on the castle, with highlights of that bluish colour, and some bits of green for an algae type of look.
