Hello there, I just acquired a used 55 gal tank. Was wanting to know what is the best way to clean it up, and what would be the best filter, hood, type of rocks, heater etc. to get for it.

Thanks for any help,

bucko

what do you want in it?

are you going to plant it?

a heavily planted tank with a small fish load has different needs from ... lets say a fish only tank with like an Oscar in it.

post what direction you are going to go in and people can better give you suggestions

all glass aquariums makes nice hoods and lights for reasonable price for a filter if your going to have dirty fish such as cichlids i would go with 2 hang on filters each rated to 55 gallons or more.. the other day i saw what i think was a tetra filter at the petstore with an integrated heater that heats the water as it flows through the filter wich i thought was pretty cool and it wasnt a bad price. If your going to have smaller community fish you should think about getting a hagen aquaclear 70 filter and just any heater thats rated to the tank size i like all glass aquarium products imo

if you could specify what type of fish you want i could let you know the rocks and such as for ways to clean it a rag and a garden hose is what i use no chemicals or anything sometimes to get rid of calcium build up and algea you could use a sponge as long as its not used and has no soaps or detergents in it
