I recently purchased a used 135 gallon complete aquarium setup with African Cichlids (LOVE IT!). I have the under gravel filter and power heads up and going, but I'm new to the power filter. I have identified it as a Aquaclear 110 Power Filter (max 500gph output), and it has the big rectangle sponge in it. I have it plugged in and running, but it sure looks like I should have a carbon bag, bio balls, or something else in there too. Anyone familiar with this filter that can help me out? If so, when you tell me what I should add, please tell me where it goes. I assume it would go on top of the sponge.

This link shows what my filter looks like:

Thanks for any help anyone can give! :)

Ok thanks. It probably did come with other stuff at some point, but since I got it used, it only had the sponge. I'll check with my LFS for replacement parts.

I always keep a seperate small bag of ceramic biomedia in the corner of mine so I have used media if I set up a new tank.

It isn't a problem having used media to keep the tank from cycling, I have the used sponge and gravel, plus I syphoned quite a bit of water out of my established 75 gallon. I'm just looking at this filter trying to figure out what should go on top of this sponge, or should it go under the sponge? I probably just need to go into my LFS to check out replacement parts and see how they normally look new. I have bags of carbon around though, if I just need to throw that on the sponge and bio balls aren't needed, that'd be no problem for me.

Set up goes like...

Foam on the bottom
then carbon
then bio thingys or whatever.

The one I have running right now is a 20 with just foam and carbon.

Its running the UGF on a 20g.
