Help with Bala

Hi everyone,

Two days ago I just got two baby bala sharks about an inch and a half. They were active in the store so I picked two out with good fins and good fin color since I heard that a lack of fin color meant they were stressed. Since I got them into my 55 (don't worry, I will be upgrading within the year and I know how big they get) one of them have been swimming in one place about 3/4 of the way up where the black neons usually swim. His fin is slightly clamped and his mouth looks to be taking breaths constantly, but he is not going to the surface. My filter breaks the water so oxygen isn't a problem. Any suggestions on what it could be? I checked him out, he has a white blemish or two (not ich, I know when I have that).

The other is very shy, although he looks good, has good color and his fins are nice and upright. I think I may have just got a shy one since he looks pretty healthy.

The other fish in the tank are 5 neons, 5 black neons, 3 guppis and 2 mollies and 2 snails. It is a planted tank with a very slight green algae outbreak that I am treating with less light.

The water has no ammonia and no nitrites since it was fully cycled. Temp is around 80, ph is around 7.2. There are plenty of hiding places. I have done 25% water changes in the past two days to make sure the water is nice and clean and to also help get rid of some of the algae.

Any suggestions as to why one bala is just swimming in one place with his mouth opening and closing?

I'm figuring he's stressed, but it's been over 48 hours and have never have a fish been stressed from being in a new tank that long.

He doesn't have dropsy since he stays in the same place, except to maybe swim around every now and then.

Could it really be just stress? How can I de-stress him? I have snails in there so I can't use aquarium salt. Any suggestions?

Another thing is I don't think it is dropsy. The current he is swimming in is very strong and it would take some strength to maintain is position.

I would just wait and see, balas can be very skittish fish. I had 3 in a 50g tank and even though they were small, maybe 3-4 inches, they would still freak out when I got near the tank, hitting the sides and the lid if I moved too quickly they are now in a 180g, which has made a huge difference
