Hello everyone
I have just set-up a chichlid tank, although I've had success with reef and marine tanks as well as fresh water, right now I'm xperiencing some dificulties with this particular set-up:
Here is the issue; fish are breathing very hard (one has already died)....I've done a 35 - 40% water change. checked the water quality "everything seems fine" now I had some left over live rocks from my marine tank, they've been outside for the past five years; I water condition them for several weeks before introducing them to the chichlid tank...my question is: could this have a bearing on the problems I'm having with the fish as well as a slight film covering the water?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Armando

Try pointing a power head towards the surface of your tank to break up that film. It might be inhibiting the oxygen levels in your tank.

Are you sure your perameters are OK??? SW LR could have a lot of dying stuff on it effecting you water.

first of all.... Welcome to AC Armando!

second..... it's spelled cichlid, not chichlid.

third..... you want to add more oxygenation to your tank. put in a few airstones and adjust your filter so that it splashes more on the water's surface. agitation on the surface will keep the film from forming.

fourth..... "everything seems fine" isn't a very precise indication of your water quality. could you please give us your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings?

fifth...... how long have you had these fish? is the tank cycled? how large is the tank and how many fish and what sizes are they? did you add them all at once? are they all from the same store?

answering those questions will help us help you.

Also what kind of cichlids do you have? I'm not certain but won't SWLR increase your hardness and ph? If so and they are ca/sa cichlids that could also be a problem along with anything that could be degrading inside the rock.
